What is interesting about this pattern?

A pattern I observed this week is the windows of buildings in NYC. Last Wednesday night, on my way back to Brooklyn, I was caught by the ordinary views through the tiny windows of the cab that I am in. On the facade of buildings along the expressway, there are windows on the buildings, perfectly lined up with each other. The most intriguing part of windows at night time is the beautiful light shining out of the window. The light enable me to see what’s happening insides each windows, each rectangles, each tiny boxes that holds family, or what we called home in this huge city. The pattern of window is constructed by the repeated rectangular structure, simple and consistent. Under the rectangular structures, laid the unknown and mysterious stories happening inside each boxes.

How does it make you feel?*

The repeated grid structure of windows in NYC give me a sense of uniform, a sense of alienation, it doesn’t matter which box is your home, because you don’t care much about who live in the upper floor or next doors. The night windows give me a sense of warmth, it’s nice to have a home that’s lightning up for you in this huge city.

What is the nature of the pattern?

repetition, variation

How might you make this pattern more perceivable?

through drawing, or video, or photography

How might you recreate this pattern in code?

In a grid of rectangles, repeat windows (front view) shot/ video clip from different buildings, lightning up, while others dimming the light.

The bigger the rectangles, the fewer windows we have on the screen

The smaller the rectangles, the more windows we have on the screen
